1.) Mt Ruapehu is an active stratovolcano located in Tongariro National Park, in the centre of the North Island, New Zealand.
2.) Mt Ruapehu is estimated to be about 200,000 years old.
3.) It is the largest volcano in New Zealand and is also the highest point in the North Island.
4.) It has the only major skifields in the North Island which are the longest ski runs in the country.
5.) An eruption in 1953 caused a lahar which desceded on the valley below destroying a rail bridge just as the Wellington - Auckland train was passing which resulted in 151 fatalities.
